Wytheville Community College Welcomes New Chief of Police

Wytheville Community College (WCC) has hired Mr. Brian Lawson to be the new Chief of Police. Mr. Lawson will supervise the WCC Police Department.

 

The department was established several years ago to provide increased campus security at the college’s Wytheville, Galax, and Marion locations.  

Prior to joining WCC, Mr. Lawson served as an investigator with the Bland County Sheriff’s Office and has previously held many roles in the Wythe County Sheriff’s Department including Patrol Division Supervisor, Patrol Team Supervisor, Tactical Team Commander, Training Coordinator, Criminal Investigator, and K-9 Handler.

Mr. Lawson is a WCC alumnus who earned his A.A.S. in Police Science from WCC in 2013. He is a graduate of Rocky Gap High School and also earned a B.S. in Management and Leadership from Bluefield College in 2015. Mr. Lawson has been an Adjunct Instructor in WCC’s Administration of Justice Program for several years.

Mr. Lawson has an extensive background in law enforcement training and holds an active DCJS Law Enforcement certificate. He has conducted training sessions at the local, state, and regional levels.

Lawson assumed the role as WCC Chief of Police on January 10, 2023, and stated about his new job, “Everyone here at WCC has been kind and welcoming, and I look forward to working with all WCC employees, faculty, and staff.  I especially look forward to meeting WCC students and helping to support them in any way that I can.”  

Dr. Dean Sprinkle, Wytheville Community College President, welcomed Mr. Lawson, saying, “I would like to welcome Mr. Brian Lawson to WCC as the college’s Chief of Police. Mr. Lawson comes to us with extensive experience in law enforcement, and our students, faculty, and staff are fortunate to have him join our team.”  

Mr. Lawson is married to Ryan Lawson. They have three children, all of whom attended WCC – Taylor and Jason Lawson, and Carter Kegley.
