5K “Sprint for Scholarships” Run/Walk Set for March 29

WCC is pleased to join with community sponsors First Bank and Trust of Wytheville and Blue Ridge Chiropractic in Wytheville for the first annual “WCC Sprint for Scholarships 5K Run/Walk” race on March 29, 2014. This family-friendly community event is a part of Wytheville Community College’s ongoing 50th Anniversary celebration.

The race will begin at 9 a.m. near the entrance to Carroll Hall on the WCC main campus. All proceeds raised from the 5K will go directly to support student scholarships at WCC. Registration is $20 per person through March 28. Runners and walkers can register online at www.wcc.vccs.edu/5K. Registration forms are also available in the WCC Educational Foundation on WCC’s campus in Smyth Hall. Registration will also be held on race day from 7:30 a.m.-8:30 a.m. Race day registration will be $25 per person. Participants who register before March 14 will be guaranteed an official “WCC Sprint for Scholarships 5K Run/Walk” race tee shirt.

The race will be professionally timed, and the race course will be officially certified by the U.S. Track and Field Association. The course was designed by seasoned runner and WCC criminal justice professor Richard “Doc” Weiss and includes parts on Rt. 365 on WCC’s campus, Main Street, 11th Street, Peppers Ferry Road, Community Boulevard, and the WCC walking/biking trail. Awards will be given to the overall first place male and female finisher. First, second, and third place age group finishers will also receive awards.
Other donations, assistance, and services for the event are being provided by Food City, Depot Designs, Runabouts Sports of Blacksburg, Wythe Produce, Food Lion stores of Wytheville and Marion, the Town of Wytheville Police Department, the Wythe County Rescue Squad, and the WCC Police Department.
