Samuel Shahan in the Nursing Simulation LabEven if you find yourself in a well-paying job, it may not be fulfilling and rewarding to you beyond the paycheck. This was the case with Samuel Shahan.  Shahan will graduate Saturday from Wytheville Community College’s Nursing Program.  Before enrolling at WCC, Shahan found himself working as a supervisor in his previous job. He had studied engineering before immigrating to the United States 10 years ago, but he found an interest in helping people. The Nursing Program at WCC has given him a pathway not just to a well paying but also to a meaningful and rewarding career.

After graduation, Shahan has accepted a position at Roanoke Memorial Hospital and also plans to continue his education to complete his Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Bluefield College. He is grateful for the help of the Nursing Faculty at WCC.  Even though he had been nervous about returning to college as an older student, he found that he was not alone and said that the faculty were very welcoming to him and to all of the students.

“It was stressful to leave my well-paying job to become a nurse,” says Shahan. “I worried if I would be successful, but everything has gone well.”

Being stuck in a dead-end job doesn’t have to be a reality. With flexible options at WCC, you can find a rewarding career-- just like Samuel Shahan. For more information about career pathways available at WCC visit www.wcc.vccs.edu/pathways.
