UPWARD BOUND, TALENT SEARCH, & STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES (PROJECT AIM)

A BRIEF HISTORY:  TRIO began as part of President Lyndon B. Johnson’s War on Poverty.  The Educational Opportunity Act of 1964 established Upward Bound.  Then in 1965, The Higher Education Act created Talent Search.  Student Support Services was launched in 1968.  Together this “trio” of federally-funded programs encourage access to higher education.  Over the past 50 years TRIO programs have become a vital pipeline to opportunity for students to access and complete higher education. 

TRIO AT WYTHEVILLE COMMUNITY COLLEGE:  WCC has sponsored TRIO programs since 1970 serving thousands of students in the college’s service region.  The programs at a glance are:

Upward Bound is an intensive educational program for service area high school students that helps them develop academic skills, personal skills, and the motivation necessary for success in high school and prepares them for success in higher education.  The program provides their students with year-round academic enrichment; personal and social enrichment; individual and academic counseling; career development; and college admission through a wide variety of activities to include cultural enrichment trips, college tours, & guest speakers.  Upward Bound staff includes:  Mary Edwards, Director; Missy Arnold, Administrative Assistant; and Susan Haga, Educational Support Specialist.  For more information about Upward Bound at Wytheville Community College, call 223-4748.

Talent Search focuses on early intervention, working with students deemed to have “college potential” in grades 6 through 12.  Students receive information on and assistance in applying for college admission, financial aid, and a wide variety of enrichment activities.  Talent Search staff includes:  Leticia Maldonado, Director; and Maria Whited, Outreach Coordinator.  For more information about Talent Search, call 223-4793.

Student Support Services (Project AIM) helps disadvantaged college students to successfully begin and stay in college.  Their goal is to increase the college retention and graduation rates of its participants and help students make the transition from one level of higher education to the next.  Services provided by WCC Student Support Services include personal and educational counseling; academic advising; career counseling; tutorial services; transfer assistance; financial aid advisement; and cultural trips and activities.  Project AIM staff includes:  Charlotte Mowery, Director; Alicia Ring, Counselor; Dianne Cregger, Program Manager; and Jessica Phillips, Outreach Coordinator.  For more information about Student Support Services, call 223-4756.
